AUSTRALIANS have the chance to choose Aussie produce with new Country of Origin Labelling laws coming into force tomorrow, July 1.
Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources David Littleproud said the new labels will let Aussies vote with their wallets and support our farmers.
“Research shows nearly three quarters of Australians think it’s important to know the country of origin of their food,” Minister Littleproud said.
“Consumers said they felt tricked by claims like Made in Australia from imported and local ingredients – so we took action.
“The bar graph and kangaroo are a simple way to display country of origin information.
“The bar chart shows how much of the product was grown by Aussie farmers.
“The kangaroo symbol tells us the food was processed or manufactured in Australia.
“Australia grows safe, clean food and we want to help consumers choose the best.
“As of Sunday, the labels are mandatory for all food offered for retail sale in Australia.
“I also recently met with the large franchised fast food outlets – like McDonalds, Subway, KFC and Domino’s. These companies agreed to put country of origin information on their websites and on apps – a sensible first step giving their customers information and choice.”
